Education System in New Zealand for International Students
New Zealand’s border has been reopened for eligible travellers to enter the country. This means international students can apply for their visas to study in New Zealand.
New Zealand has eight state-funded universities, 16 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) which have been unified into the Te Pūkenga- New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST), and about 550 Private Training Establishments (PTEs), which include English language schools.
The main qualification in New Zealand secondary schools, the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA), is widely recognised internationally. Places that recognise NCEA include Australia, the United Kingdom, Europe, Germany, India and Thailand.
New Zealand bachelor’s degrees are widely recognised internationally for enrolment in postgraduate programmes at universities around the world.

New Zealand Qualifications Framework
The New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) is a system for acknowledging the level and quality of qualifications offered by New Zealand education providers.
All qualifications listed on the NZQF come with an assurance of quality that is recognised and trusted worldwide.
The New Zealand Qualifications Framework has 10 levels:
- Levels 1-4 cover the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) – the main qualification in secondary schools, and basic vocational training.
- Levels 5-6 cover sub-degree vocational certificates and diplomas.
- Levels 7-10 cover degrees, graduate and postgraduate qualifications.
The NZQF study level indicates how advanced a qualification is. It is also relevant for post-study work visas for international students in New Zealand.

Academic Year in New Zealand
The academic year in New Zealand generally runs from late February to mid-November. During this period, most courses are offered in three semesters:
- Semester one: late February to mid-June
- Semester two: late July to early November
- Summer semester: mid-November to late February
The academic year is divided into holidays and vacation periods. Generally, there is a two-week break between semesters, two weeks of study-free holidays in April, and a four-week mid-year break in July and August.
In addition to the holidays and vacation periods, some universities offer mid-semester breaks and optional study periods outside of the standard academic year. These breaks and study periods may vary from university to university.
Scholarships and Studying Costs in New Zeland
All higher education in New Zealand requires you to pay per academic year of study. Fees in New Zealand are relatively low compared to those of other developed countries.
- Fees for undergraduate study can cost about NZ$22,000–$32,000 (US$16,000-$23,000) per year. Costs vary depending on your course.
- Postgraduate courses can cost between NZ$26,000-$37,000 (US$19,000-$27,000) per year.
- Living costs across much of New Zealand normally come to at least NZ$15,000 (US$11,000) per year.
New Zealand offers a range of scholarships for international students to study in the country which provide financial assistance to help cover the cost of tuition, living expenses, and other related costs.
The New Zealand Government provides a range of scholarships for international students. Universities also offer a range of scholarships for international students like: the International Student Excellence Scholarship, which provides up to NZ$10,000 for tuition fees, and the International Student Merit Scholarship, which provide up to NZ$5000 for tuition fees.
Living and Working in New Zealand for students
This is a huge advantage! While a lot of countries don’t allow you to take up part time work while on a student visa, New Zealand does. Sure, you may not want to (or have to) work while studying, but for those of you that do want to earn a little extra spending money, you’re free to do so.
As well as being allowed to work while at university, you can also stay and work for a full year after graduating. On top of this, if the job you’re doing is relevant to your degree, you’ll be allowed to stay for two years after graduating, after which you’ll be able to apply for permanent residency. Who knows, perhaps your university stint in New Zealand could turn into a career stint!

In Australia before applying for Student Visa, you need to be enrolled in an educational institute. For this, all the past education qualifications should be provided with IELTS/ PTE scores as well. A Statement of Purpose (SOP) including all the personal information, reason for choosing Australia and in that particular educational institute, financial support from family, etc. should be written while applying for the colleges/ universities. Total assets of the family should also be shown. Once the offer letter is received from the educational institutions to which you applied, an email should be sent back to that educational institute. Once you show the financial ability to bear your living expense during the stay in Australia, COE (Confirmation of Enrolment) will be sent to you. International students should also apply for Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) as it is also mandatory so that student visa doesn’t get cancelled. It helps students with their medical bills while they are living in Australia.
